History of the West Coast Institute for Studies in Anthroposophy
The West Coast Institute for Studies in Anthroposophy was founded in 1995 in Vancouver, British Columbia, as an umbrella organization offering workshops, conferences, and trainings based on Anthroposophy. We began with the Waldorf Early Childhood Teacher Training in 1996, offered part-time over two years. This step was taken in response to a request by WECAN (Waldorf Early Childhood Association of North America) to meet the needs of Waldorf schools in Canada and the Pacific North West. This training program has attracted students from across Canada and the USA. Since 1996, 67 students have graduated from the Waldorf Early Childhood Teacher Training Program and are now working in Waldorf schools and early childhood settings.
During the summer sessions, courses in Anthroposophy, the arts, and curriculum studies, a therapeutic training and advanced courses for early childhood teachers have also been offered. In 2007 and 2008, a program for Infant and Toddler Caregivers was offered.
It has long been an intention to offer grade school teacher training. A four-year, part time training began in July 2008 as the Waldorf Elementary Teacher Training Program. The titles of our Programs have since changed to:
Waldorf Teacher Education – Early Childhood
Waldorf Teacher Education – Grades
During these past years the School of Nature (an international initiative concerned with reconnecting the human being with the World of Nature) has also hosted events under the sponsorship of the West Coast Institute.
Both Waldorf Teacher Education Programs offered by the West Coast Institute for Studies in Anthroposophy are recognized by WECAN and AWSNA.
Currently the West Coast Institute offers a four-year, part time Waldorf Grades Teacher Education Program, a two-year, part time Waldorf Early Childhood Teacher Education Program and differing courses each summer.
