What is the Format of the Program?
Each year is made up of a three-week intensive session in the summer, together with a one-week session each fall and spring. The three-week sessions are at present held at Shawnigan Lake School in Duncan, on Vancouver Island, whilst the fall and spring sessions take place in North Vancouver.
Assignments will be carried out by the students during the rest of the year. Classroom observations and teaching practicums will be a necessary part of the training.
Successful Completion of the Program:
Students who have successfully completed the full two-year, part-time program will receive a Letter of Completion as well as a Waldorf Early Childhood Teaching Certificate. This Certificate will carry the approval and authority of the Association of Waldorf Schools of North America (AWSNA), as well as that of the West Coast Institute for Studies in Anthroposophy (WCI)
NOTE
Teachers must possess a basic Early Childhood Education Certificate and/or a provincial teaching certificate, or a degree that qualifies for an Independent Schools Teaching Certificate, if they wish to teach as a lead teacher in a Waldorf Kindergarten in British Columbia or Alberta, that is licensed by the Ministry of Education. A lead Preschool teacher must possess an Early Childhood Education Certificate as recognized by the Ministry of Family & Child Services. An individual can work as an Assistant in a Waldorf Kindergarten or Pre-school licensed by the respective Ministry, if they are in the process of completing the necessary qualifications.
What are the Dates of the Program?
The next cycle's first session will be in July 2011. More details will be available closer to the time.
What are the Program Fees?
The cost of the three-week summer session, together with the two six-day sessions in the fall and the spring, plus the follow-up mentoring meetings, will be $4400 CDN per year.
There is a one-time, non-refundable, application fee of $100 and also additional costs for the required course textbooks as set out in the information package that is supplied to those who enroll. Program fees can, if preferred, be paid by instalment, in advance, prior to each session.
After the payment deadline is past, a late fee of $100.00 CDN will be charged.
Cancellations will be refunded in accordance with the requirements of the Private Career Training Institution Agency (PCTIA) of British Columbia.
The West Coast Institute for Studies in Anthroposophy reserves the right to make changes to fees, policies, regulations and courses when deemed necessary, and as permitted by PCTIA.
Application Process
A personal interview with one of the Institute’s Program Directors is necessary prior to acceptance. The school admits as regular students:
- Applicants who have had some experience working with children, preferably in a Waldorf setting.
- Applicants with some post secondary education, for example a University or College degree or a Provincial Teaching Certificate.

- Applicants must complete and submit the ‘West Coast Institute Waldorf Early Childhood Teacher Education’ application for admission form.
- Applicants are to provide a brief outline of their own biography. Explain reasons for applying for this program and include personal and professional goals. Provide any information that would be helpful in considering your application.
- Applicants must supply a character reference letter from an employer and one or two from individuals not related to you.
- Applicants must submit a recent photograph.
- Applicants must send a note from a licensed physician which certifies that the applicant is in good health, free from communicable disease, including TB, and fit to undertake training.
- Applicants must pay the $100 non-refundable application processing fee with the application for admission, payable to ‘West Coast Institute’.
- Applicants must agree to a criminal record check provided by their local police department. Any charges involved must be born by the applicant.
- All previous debts to the West Coast Institute must be settled prior to admission.
What is the Application Deadline?
The application deadline for registration is May 15, 2011. Applications that are received after this date will be considered if there are still places available.
How do I Enroll in the Program?
Application forms are available from the West Coast Institute by mail, or they can be downloaded below (see Forms) and printed out. A non-refundable application fee of $100 (payable by cheque or money order and in Canadian funds) must be submitted with each application for admission, and made payable to the West Coast Institute. Upon receipt of this fee, the application will be processed and, following acceptance, a full information package will be sent out, together with order forms for meals, accommodation and a list of required course textbooks.
Supplies needed: Students will need a kinderharp, an apron for clay work, pen and 3-ring binder, coloured pencils and eurythmy shoes (or soft-soled canvas slip-ons). Information on sources will be provided. Required books and supplies will be listed prior to each session and can be ordered through the West Coast Institute. The West Coast Institute will supply other materials as needed.
What about Meals?
Meals and snacks, at reasonable cost, are readily available at all locations at the students' expense.
What about Accommodation and Travel?
Arrangements & costs for accommodation and travel are the student’s responsibility. In summer, housing can be arranged through the West Coast Institute Administrator. For fall and spring, accommodation arrangements in homes in North Vancouver can often be made through one of the Program Co-Directors. The hosts must then be contacted directly by the students themselves. Travel to and from these accommodations must be arranged by the students.
What about Medical Insurance?
Students coming from outside of BC should check the status of their medical insurance.
